Loonies for Haiti

The catastrophe that recently struck Haiti has the International Community concerned about helping out with rebuilding the country. As a school, we are asking each child to bring in One dollar to help out with the efforts. The goal is to have each class raise enough money to send one child to school (roughly $20 per month). If you could send your donations with your child over the next few weeks it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your kind support and consideration of this tragic event. Mr. Anderson

MS Read-a-thon

Dear Parents,
Today was our "kick-off" assembly for the MS Read-a-thon. Students are asked to set a goal of how many minutes they would like to read between now and February 16th (both in school and at home) in an attempt to raise money for MS, and for research into a cure. As with the "skate for skip", the students are NOT being asked to go door to door, but rather are directed to ask for pledges from family members, and friends of the family. This read-a-thon links nicely with our "Raptors Read to Achieve" program, as the students are finding that they are able to do "double duty" but reaching two goals with one attempt.
Please feel free to contact me at the school if you have any further questions regarding this program. Together we can make a difference in the lives of others! Mr. Anderson.

Skating for Skip...

As you may have heard by now our class has the unique opportunity to be part of SKIP (Seniors and Kids Integrational Programs) that links students and the elderly to teach compassion and empathy for people of all ages. As part of this program we are able to take part in the "Skate for Skip" fund raiser that is taking place on February 11th. The envelope should have gone home with your child tonight, and is due back to me by Tuesday February 9th.
In terms of fund-raising I am not asking the children to go door to door, but rather get donations from family members, or people at their parents place of work. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at the school, or check out the website at wwww.goskip.org, Mr. Anderson.

Reading Rocks

On the morning of Thursday January 28th we will be hosting the "Reading Rocks" program at our school. This is a program that is put on by the home and school committee, and is linking student literacy with members of the community. Each class will have a special guest reader, and each child will be provided with a free pancake breakfast at first nutrition break (11:00-1140). Come out and support a great cause to link literacy with lifetime success. Mr. Anderson

Virtual Classroom...
We have created an online virtual classroom to use as part of our ever growing attempt to incorporate technology into what your child is learning in the classroom. In this "virtual classroom" the students will be able to create their own avatar, and use them to create graphic novels. For instance, one of the expectations for the Grade 5 Social Studies project is to create a 6 panel comic strip that advertises why their party she be elected. Most of the students have already created their avatar, and can edit it as they wish. They need to sign in under students, and remember the classroom code is B206. Check it out! Mr. Anderson

Interactive Protractor
Dear Parents,
Your child has been learning about different types of geometric angles, and how to measure using a protractor. Below is a link that we have been using in class to make it more fun and interactive for them. Please take a few minutes at home this week to use this tool with your son/daughter to help them review. Mr. Anderson
