Grade 5 Social Studies

Dear Grade 5 Parents,

Your child has begun a Social Studies unit on Aspects of Citizenship. They are learning that Canada is built on the idea of multiculturalism, and that this is shaping our idea of "Canadian Identity." For this unit they are asked to research into their own heritage (traditions/celebrations, different cultural foods, cultural interests such as sports, as well as their family life) and relate it to the idea of "Canadian Identity."

Over the next few days please discuss with your child their heritage, and how it has shaped and influenced the citizen that they have become today. They, in turn, will write an "I am Canadian" report based on the idea of blending their cultural background with the concept of what it means to be "Canadian." If you have any items that may assist your child with their project please feel free to have them bring them to school (with your permission of course), so they can teach the rest of the class about their heritage. In my next post I will attach the rubric so the students know how they are being marked. Any questions please feel free to contact me at the school. Mr. Anderson

Science Culminating Task

Here is an electronic copy of the science task that the students are to complete for this Wednesday. The rubric is attached to it, so you will know how what your child is being marked on. Mr Anderson.

November Newsletter

Due Dates this week

Just a reminder to parents that progress reports go home tomorrow with your child. Please use these as a conversation piece with them about how they are progressing this year. These reports will simply state how many assignments have been collected for each subject, how many your child has completed, and how many are still incomplete. Please sign and return them by Friday of this week. Any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at the school.

Also, we have reached the end of our science unit on energy in grade five. The students are expected to complete their assignment on "which is the most effective source of energy" by Wednesday, and give a short (1 min) presentation on why they feel that the form of energy they chose (coal, solar, wind, or biomass) is the most effective. This assignment was given to the students on Thursday, so they should have a good start on it by now. The criteria for grading is also on the handout, so the students know what is expected of them. Science Journal...

Grade Fives,

Think about the experiment that we did today on wind power. In your science journal explain your observations about what happened. When did your windmill work the best, when did it not work at all. What connections can we make to the use of windmills to create energy? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using wind power to create electricity?

Student Teacher...

Dear Parents,

I am sure you have heard from your children already that we have a student teacher from Nipissing University in our classroom. His name is Mr. Uyleese, and he will be helping out in our classroom each and every Monday until April. During his time at Banbury he will be able to get to know the students, and will get some practice teaching in our classroom. I am sure this will be a rewarding experience for all involved. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions around this. Mr. Anderson

Progress Reports...

Dear Parents,

Your child will be bringing home a progress report in two weeks time (November 2nd), outlining the number of assignments I have collected from them per subject, the number they have completed, and the number that they still have outstanding. I find this helps remind the child of the work that they need to complete in time for reports, and becomes a good conversation piece between parent and child. Should you or your child have any questions around incomplete work, please feel free to contact me at the school, or leave a note in your child's agenda. Mr. Anderson.

Solar Energy Journal...

Grade Fives, here is your journal assignment from what we have been learning about solar energy in class. Good luck, Mr. Anderson.

"What did we learn about solar energy from our water bottle experiment? Which bottle warmed up the most? Which warmed up the least? Explain why you think this happened.

New energy site!

To go along with our unit on energy, I have found a neat and interactive site that the kids can use at home to apply their knowledge. Have fun with it!

http://www.eere.energy.gov/kids/

Science Journal...

I noticed that not many of the Grade 5's brought home their science homework with them this weekend, so I am posting the task to our website so they can complete it for Monday. The task is to write a journal on the following question:

"Think about the experiment we did with mining for chocolate chips. What cookie was easier to get the chocolate chips out of? How does this experiment relate to the mining of coal for energy? What is the problem with using coal (a non-renewable source of energy) as a main source of energy?"

If your child has left their science duo tang at school, they can complete this assignment on lined paper, and hand it in for Monday. Thanks, Mr. Anderson

Read to Achieve Pictures...

For those of you who wanted to see pictures from the event, here you go!

Mr. Anderson

Reading Response Tasks...

A couple parents have requested that the home reading response tasks be posted to the web so they have a reference place to look when work has been misplaced, or left behind at school. Below is a list of the tasks the students may choose from, because there is a variety, I ask that the students not choose the same one twice.

Beside the task is the maximum mark they are able to achieve. Since some tasks require more time and effort than others, they are weighted differently.Over the weekend I hope to have up the rubric that is used to mark these, as they are a part of your child's reading mark.

Please ensure that your child has one completed per month, and has it submitted by the last instructional day of the month at the latest (if the last day of the month lands on a weekend like this month, then it will be due the Friday before that weekend). Thanks for your ongoing support.

Mr. Anderson

Read to Achieve Success!!

Thank-you to everyone who participated in the "Read to Achieve" kick-off at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The children seemed to have a great time, and I was so proud in the way that they represented Banbury Heights. Thank-you to the parents who volunteered their time to ensure that their child had a memorable experience. Also, thanks to parents who sent their children on this trip, giving them the opportunity to have a long lasting memory. I hope to provide more long lasting memories for the students as the year goes on. Thanks again for all the support! Mr. Anderson

October Newsletter....

Due to technical difficulties, the I was unable to put up the class newsletter on the webpage this month. As a result, your child was sent home with a paper copy of it today. Also, please note that there are a few important dates in October that are not on the website. First of all, the rough copy of your child's fairy tale is due on Tuesday October 13th. I will be editing them, and returning them to them so they can complete their good copy electronically by Monday October 19th. Your child has been giving a copy of the rubric that I will use to mark them with, and I will try and post a copy to the website.

Also, picture information packages should have came home with your child this evening. Picture day is Wednesday October 28th, with re-take day being Thursday October 29th for students who are away. Please ensure that there children are prepared for this event.

Raptors "Read To Achieve Program"

As part of the kickoff of the "Raptors Read to Achieve Program" we have been given the opportunity to attend the opening festivities in Toronto on Thursday October 15th. This is an attempt to link literacy with character education, and will give the students an up close look at their favourite Raptors as they will have an opportunity to see a Raptors Practice. Although the ticket itself is free, we will need to pay for the cost of the bus. If you are interested in volunteering in the trip, please leave a note in your child's agenda. More details to come this week! Check out the link below for more info!!

Tribes Community

During the first few weeks of school your child has taken part in the "Tribes Learning Community" process, which has allowed us to lay the foundation for our classroom expectations. These expectations will ensure that everyone feels safe and welcome in our classroom. The four agreements are: Attentive Listening, Mutual Respect, No Put-Downs, The Right To Pass/Participate. Please discuss and review these agreements with your child on a regular basis.
