Grade 5 Social Studies

Dear Grade 5 Parents,

Your child has begun a Social Studies unit on Aspects of Citizenship. They are learning that Canada is built on the idea of multiculturalism, and that this is shaping our idea of "Canadian Identity." For this unit they are asked to research into their own heritage (traditions/celebrations, different cultural foods, cultural interests such as sports, as well as their family life) and relate it to the idea of "Canadian Identity."

Over the next few days please discuss with your child their heritage, and how it has shaped and influenced the citizen that they have become today. They, in turn, will write an "I am Canadian" report based on the idea of blending their cultural background with the concept of what it means to be "Canadian." If you have any items that may assist your child with their project please feel free to have them bring them to school (with your permission of course), so they can teach the rest of the class about their heritage. In my next post I will attach the rubric so the students know how they are being marked. Any questions please feel free to contact me at the school. Mr. Anderson
